Director Selects: Mexican brothers united in advocacy and art

By Thor Steingraber

A family filled with musical prodigies always sparks curiosity — how is it that so much talent can reside in a single household? For three brothers from Veracruz, Mexico the “secret sauce” included a supportive mother, an outstanding teacher, and an immersion in regional culture, music, and art of all types.

As young adults, having dispersed to locations in United States and Europe, they were swept up in the promise of prestigious careers in classical music, but then Carnegie Hall presented them a different type of opportunity, so they dropped everything to reunite as a trio. For 20 years since, The Villalobos Brothers have brought their musical talents and cultural explorations to stages worldwide, performing with superstars like Bruce Springsteen.

When they appeared at The Soraya in 2021, performing in Arturo O’Farrill’s Fandango at the Wall, audiences were taken by their spirit, energy, humor, and warmth. I knew we had to have them back for an evening of their own. In this current moment, they reflect on their role as Mexican-Americans, musical ambassadors, and a source of pride, comfort, and hope for all immigrants.

Gratefully,
